1/2S Build a Bridge

Dear Bloggers,

1/2S had to help Sam and Sara cross the crocodile infested river.  The design brief was a stable bridge that spanned greater than 20cm  and was at least 10 high.  It had to support at least 400g and have easy and safe access.

1/2S Design and Make Pets with Pulley Operated Eyes

Dear Bloggers,

1/2S love pets so much that they made their own that were actually allowed to live in the classroom for one week.  Anything was possible except they had to be made from the Early Simple Machine’s Lego. The eyes also had to be pulley operated so that the left and right eyes could go the same and opposite ways and at the same and different speeds.

Designing, Making and Testing Games for the Ice Hockey players

Dear Bloggers,

Last week the students of 1/2S made their hockey players…..but what good is a player without a game to play?!?  That’s where 1/2S came into the picture.  Students designed their own games with rules, scoring systems and playing fields.  The best part of course was testing the game!!!  Design modifications were made as needed and lots of mathematics happened as the children added up all the scores.

1/2S Play Ice Hockey

Dear Bloggers,

1/2S had lots of fun building the Ice Hockey player.  His lever arm is operated by a series of gears and great for shooting goals.  Pupils predicted how distance from the goal mouth and weight of the ball affected the accuracy of scoring.  They created a field with accurate measurements and practised goal shooting to test their predictions.

1/2S Design and Make A Crane

Dear Bloggers,

1/2S have been investigating and experimenting with levers.  In this lesson they were required to problem solve applying their knowledge of levers and pulleys.  This involved designing and making cranes with a: fixed pulley , handle to operate them, stable base and the advanced models had a locking mechanism.

Year 1/2S make Crazy Floors

Dear Bloggers,

1/2S made a wonderful fun park ride today which spun two people around.  It was hand cranked and pulley operated.  The challenge was to spin the different riders around in the greatest combinations of ways by varying the speed and direction.  This was achieved by changing the relative sizes of the pulleys and the orientation of the belt.

1/2S Use Their Knowledge of Levers to Create a Railway Barrier

Dear Bloggers,

1/2S have been making and investigating levers.  Now it was time to apply their new knowledge when they designed and made a railway crossing barrier.  It had to be balanced, stable and easy to operate.

2AF Design and Make a Popcorn Cart with a Revolving Sign

Dear Bloggers,

Last week 2AF used their knowledge of gears to design and make a fast ride.  This week it was all about moving slowly.  The design brief was to create a popcorn cart with a rotating sign that was hand turned.

1/2S Make Catapults

Dear Bloggers,

1/2s were continuing to investigate levers.  They constructed 2 catapults: one with a small load arm and the other with a long load arm.  They predicted and tested which one could propel an object further.    Pupils then applied this knowledge to design achampion catapult.  The strength of the device was important as catapults with long load arms often break so students had to reinforce their designs.

1/2S Design and Make Popcorn Carts

Dear Bloggers,

The design brief today was to make a cart for selling popcorn that was mobile, stable and had a revolving sign that could be hand turned. Initially we discussed the speed that the sign should turn at.  Our previous lesson had been all about speed making our ride as fast as possible.  A sign, however, must be read so it has to turn slowly.  We brainstormed words to go on the sign and what text and colours should be used. Look at the wonderful results below.

The driver has a specially designed seat.
