Year 4 Cool The Air

Dear Bloggers,

Year 4 designed, made and programmed fans to operate with a joy stick  controlling the motor speed and direction.  The day was hot so the challenge was  to spin the propeller as fast as possible.  Several very talented boys created compound gear chains to maximise the amount of gearing up  and wow did their fans spin!!  It was really cool – literally.

Some clever students made design modifications adding a hand tilt so the fan could also pivot up and down.

Year 4 Control The Speed

Dear Bloggers,

Last week Year 4 designed and made a robot to  suit a program to increase and decease the speed of a motor.  The students were very innovative. Some of the great ideas included a ferris wheel that spun the riders quickly over the top of the loop but slowed down whilst the people were hanging upside down in their seats in the lower part of the path.  Aeroplanes had propellers which turned at variable speeds depending on the conditions and multi speed electric drills were just some of the amazing creations.

Year 4 have the Program but what have they designed??

Dear Bloggers,

The first Year of the WeDo Lego Program at GEPS  involves the children building models and then writing appropriate programs.  Year 4 are now carrying out the design process the other way around.  They were given  a program for a completely random sound and they were required to design and make a model to fit the program.  Advanced students added motors and sensors and refined and added to the program.  Innovation abounded with Ferris wheels, electric drills, a menagerie of animals and cars all randomly making sounds selected by the children.

It Just Keeps On Getting Better

Dear Bloggers,

I feel so very grateful to be teaching at such a wonderful school where our lovely Principal Ms Jennifer Simmonds so thoughtfully purchases excellent resources for the school.  Year 4 are very fortunate as we now have add on kits for the Stage 2 We Do Program that I have been doing.  The children opened the new kits last week and we investigated all the new pieces identifying ones that the students’ had not seen before.  In teams the students carried out their own personal experiments and designed and built their own creations which used as many of the unseen pieces before.  The results were simply mind blowing and they all worked so well with big smiles on their faces.  They were a joy to teach 🙂
